As members of Sigma Kappa, we understand how important it is to give back to the community. Each year, we host philanthropy events, participate in UAB sponsored service events, and we host service events to keep the environment around us clean. Sigma Kappa has 5 sororities that spell out SIGMA: the Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology research, Maine Sea Coast Mission, and Alzheimer's disease support and research. Learn more about our philanthropies and how we are supporting them below!
The Sigma Kappa Foundation's mission is to create and fund leadership, scholarship, and philanthropic initiatives that reflect the values and spirit of Sigma Kappa Sorority. The Foundation fulfills this mission through their 5 funding priorities. These funding priorities are PULSE: philanthropic initiatives, unrestricted gifts, lleadership development, sisters in need, and education. Our chapter supports the Sigma Kappa Foundation by hosting our SKatterball event in the spring! SKatterball is a dodgeball tournament that sororities and fraternities on campus compete in to win money that goes towards their respective philanthropies!
Our next philanthropy is Inherit the Earth. To support this philanthropy, we go out in the community and do park clean-ups, volunteer at the Jones Valley Teaching Farm, and we do clean-up events on campus to help keep UAB beautiful.
Our third philanthropy is gerontology. We support gerontology by visiting local nursing homes and playing bingo, baking them treats, and by making them Valentines' Day and Christmas cards! This year, we held our first ever Halloween Dance at a local nursing home. Our sisters loved visiting with the residents of the nursing home and dancing the night away with them!
In 1918, the Maine Sea Coast Mission was voted to become Sigma Kappa's first-ever philanthropy to support the state in which Sigma Kappa was founded. To support this philanthropy, we host drives to collect things like non-perishable food items, blankets, scarves, socks, and gloves to send to the parts of Maine that are not reachable in the winter months.
Last but certainly not least, we support the Alzheimer's Association. Every year, our entire chapter participates in the Walk to End Alzheimer's that is held at Sloss Furnaces. Each year, we strive to raise more and more money for this amazing organization. In 2018, we raised over $9,000 for the Walk to End Alzheimer's! The week prior to the Walk, we have raffles to win prizes and our Sig Kap Mac and Cheese event where we sell tickets for a macaroni and cheese dinner.
